Furnace Filters 101

We have personally installed and used every product that you see on our website; that means everything you see is something we've tested and something we loved. Your specific needs will determine which replacement furnace filter to choose. We're happy to help you select the right filter - just send us an email!

Choosing a furnace filter is not as easy as driving down to your local hardware store and picking one off the shelf. Based on over 50 years of heating, air conditioning, and air cleaning experience, we have found that make the right filter choice can affect the amount of dust in your home, allergy or asthma problems, and even the life of your furnace!

There are three main considerations when selecting a furnace filter.

1) Filter Type: pleated, non-pleated, boxed media air cleaner, electrostatic, electronic, or HEPA

2) Filter Size: what size filter do you currently have and will the new replacement furnace filter fit in the existing space, or do you want to install a new, larger and more effective air cleaner?

3) Filter Quality or Effectiveness: Different filters do a better or worse job at filtering different things. Some people have a problem with airborn particulates, like dust and dirt. The most commonly-used measurement of a furnace filter's effectiveness in dealing with particulates is the "MERV Rating." Click Here to learn more about MERV Ratings in our article entitled "What Is MERV?" Some homes have issues with bioaerosols, such as odors or chemicals. And some have problems with VOCs, or Volatile Organic Compounds. There is a furnace filter to address each of these issues, and some air purifiers can handle all three! For instance, the Lennox PureAir air purification system does an excellent job of dealing with particulates, bioaerosols, and VOCs and is one of the highest-quality units you can buy anywhere. Check out the Lennox PureAir air purification system in our Air Purifiers section!
